St Michaels Golf Club

The First Hundred Years

In the year 1903 an number of notable events occurred. The Wright Brothers made the first powered flight. Henry Ford set up his car factory in Detroit, and at a meeting held in Leuchars Public School, St Michaels Golf Club was founded. The meeting under the Chairmanship of Rev William Broom, was attended by Rev William Smith, Miss Isa Rait, Miss Mary Rait, Messrs Martin Anderson, David Henderson, Charles Kay, William F Dawson, James Gray, James Simpson, Lennais Simpson, Thomas Rodger, Alexander Johnston, James Laing, James W B Dawson, John Ritchie and John MacKay.

Martin Anderson proposed that those present should form themselves into a golf club. The proposal was seconded by John Ritchie and agreed unanimously by those present. Martin Anderson and Alexander Johnston were appointed Joint Secretaries, and a Committee of seven men and one lady was elected.

Martin Anderson, widely known in the literary world under the pseudonym 'Cynicus', had recently returned from London where he had enjoyed several years of fame and fortune as an artist and cartoonist, but when the demand for his work declined he returned to Fife to concentrate on his business, the Cynicus Publishing Company in Tayport.

In spite of the demands of the business he was obviously very actively involved with the club during its formative years, serving as Secretary and as a Council member for many years.

On the 22nd May a further meeting was held, and it was reported that fifty six Ladies and Gentlemen had signified their intention of becoming members, so a General Meeting was called for 29th May 1903.
